After our ill-fated trip to towns we'd normally* never go to, Renita and I have come up with some new expressions:
Don't miss your stop
Pay attention/don't miss an opportunity
Mike:
I should've stayed in SF after Christmas--I really missed my stop on that one.
Jeremy:
I told you so!
A.
To wait for the 5 AM train
B.
To walk to Mullheim
To do something pointless (eg, to beat a dead horse).
Mike:
I went on a date last night with this German woman I met. Turned out I was just waiting for the 5 AM train--she's engaged!
Renita:
So it was a walk to Mullheim, eh? That sucks.
Going to Auggen
Making a big mistake.
Mike:
I'm thinking of working in Germany for a year.
David:
I think you're going to Auggen on that one, Mike. Go to Russia instead!
To go to Auggen
To go badly (ie, to go to hell; to go pear shaped).
Mike:
My date yesterday went completely to Auggen. Never ever go on a date with someone who can only speak 3 words of your language and vice-versa.
NB! Note that the tense change also changes the meaning between
going to Auggen and
go/went to Auggen.
To get to Freiburg
To finish a long journey or arduous task
Renita:
Well, it took two days but I finally got to Freiburg with this report.
Mike:
Great! Let's go dancing!
*We are actually considering going back to Mullheim for a jazz show next weekend; perhaps there will be a later addition to the phrases above.
